The sun has variable effects depending on the specific characteristics of the skin. Therefore, the best way to protect yourself from radiation is to know the concept of a phototype. We tell you more.
We have all noticed from time to time that the reaction of
the skin to the sun is not the same for this or that person. However, we limit
ourselves to associate this phenomenon with the fact that dark skin tones are
more resistant. Actually, there is a scientific classification called skin
phototype that has many uses.
Thus, knowing the exact place in the classification of skin
phototypes allows anticipating the damage that dermal tissue can withstand by
ultraviolet radiation, as well as the risk of developing diseases associated
with exposure (cancer or premature aging).
What is the skin phototype?
The skin phototype is the capacity and reaction of the
dermis to solar radiation, which has a direct relationship with the tone of
each person. In fact, Dr. Thomas Fitzpatrick in 1975 carried out an extensive
development and classification of topics that spanned 6 categories.
The above-mentioned dermatologist's examination took into
account factors such as skin color, hair color, type of skin irritation in the
form of sunburn (associated with melanin), and the frequency of burns.
Although detailed research was carried out, the results are
considered to represent some degree of subjectivity, as interviews with
sun-affected people were conducted that were beyond the scope of the
conclusions.
Characteristics of skin phototypes
The six phototypes included in the Fitzpatrick
classification have characteristics that depend on the color of the skin, hair
and eyes. Also, they
Phototype 1
For phototype 1, the skin color is very light and resembles
an ivory hue. The eyes can vary between lighter shades of gray, blue, and
green.
In turn, the hair tends to be light blonde or reddish.
Finally, the solar reaction shows burns with moderate exposure, but with little
or no tanning, since peeling occurs.
Phototype 2
The skin is light or pale, while the hair is light. Also the
eyes are between green, blue and gray.
When the body is exposed to sunlight, freckles and a slight
tan sometimes appear. Also, the peeling process occurs many times.
Phototype 3
People have light or golden skin and light brown hair. The
color of their eyes varies from light brown to light brown. Regarding the
reaction to the sun, burns are less frequent and tanning occurs regularly.
